from a Chinese company director

God is doing a wonderful work reaching people from different social groups in China. There are lots of house churches in this city, and lots of churches in factories like ours. Because of government control the preaching of the Word needs to be done in hidden ways and Christian books have to be supplied through underground channels.

I came to know the Lord three years ago. I was raised in an atheist environment. I worked for the Chinese Communist Party for many years and represented the Party in my area. I also worshipped idols. Life seemed good.

I opened my own company, but then a partner took the money and ran. I found another partner and this one was a believer. He asked if I had any particular difficulties and said I could talk to him if I did. I felt shy of saying anything and did not want to lose face. But another manager had already told him about the situation. So he lent me the money to keep the company going.

I came to realise that he was a believer. There are thousands of years of tradition of worshipping idols in China and it was the first time I had met a Christian. We had arguments about it. I said, “You believe your Jesus; I’ll believe in idols.” We agreed to disagree. But he gave me tracts to read. I saw he was different from other people. I contrasted Christianity and Buddhism. Buddhism is about getting blessing for yourself; Christianity is about blessing others. They are very different.

I wanted to know more because of his example. I was challenged by Matthew 4:4 – “Let your yes be yes, and your no be no.” It’s very un-Chinese! I wanted to find the true God. It took three months. I read the ‘Song of a Wanderer’ book and I totally changed my outlook and professed openly that I was a Christian. I got rid of my charms and idols and was baptized.

The company has grown from 20 to 50 people. It has gone from a company that worshipped idols to a company that worships Jesus. On Friday nights we have services. At first just a few people believed in the Lord; now the majority are Christian. The company deals with many people and is now a window for the Gospel.

We want to thank you for coming with all those heavy bags of books. As I read those books, I had a revelation from God about things I had never understood before. I thank you and I thank God for His grace because you came here. We do not often have such books. Thank you for coming.

God is working. I will pass the books around to let people have an encounter with the Lord like I did. I only had one copy of ‘Song of a Wanderer’ and I so wanted more. The change in me is a picture of what God can do for China. Many people with professional jobs have an emptiness. I know that from my own experience. With Chinese intellectuals, you do not need to babble on. You just tell them a concept and give them a book, and they will hunger after it.

I still struggle. There were accidents at the company when workers cut their hands two days in a row. It was a great struggle. I wondered why God was not helping and I was tempted to turn back to idols. Then I saw the truth of Romans 8:28. The Lord helped my character to grow through that. I joined with two people to pray each day and to read the Bible, and that helped me. I experienced divine help through these people when I was most disappointed. I discovered what love and peace really are and I experienced His abiding presence. At times we are very passionate but we do not know the right way forward. We need encouragement and support from the Body.
